With the Ever-Growing Popularity of Tattoos, Free Tips from Tattoo Johnny Help Consumers Avoid the Risks of Unsafe or Unsightly Tattoos

Author: Matthew Walker

As the tattoo craze continues non-stop, industry leader Tattoo Johnny offers consumers free advice on how to get a safe tattoo they’ll enjoy for the rest of their life.

Yardville, NJ (PRWEB) August 3, 2005 -- Around one-third of all Americans between the ages of 25 and 39 now have at least one tattoo, and the trend continues to grow. Despite a doubling of the number of tattoo studies in the country in the last five years to accommodate demand, tattooing remains largely unregulated. According to Tattoo Johnny (www.tattoojohnny.com), the largest seller of tattoo designs in the world, consumers need to keep their eyes open before taking the tattoo plunge. By taking a few specific steps, they can maximize their chance of getting a safe tattoo they’ll enjoy for the rest of their life.

“With increased visibility on TV, in movies and in sports, tattooing has gone mainstream,” says Mark Nelson, founder of Tattoo Johnny. “Unfortunately, some unscrupulous people are rushing to cash in on the trend. In the past, tattooists served a rigorous apprenticeship under the close supervision of an experienced professional. Tattoo machines were hand crafted and sold by their makers to qualified tattooists. That self-regulation is now a thing of the past, with do-it-yourself kits and video instruction available on the Internet. So our company felt it was vital to put together guidelines for consumers on how to protect themselves.”

Health risks of careless tattooing, including transmission of hepatitis B or C, HIV, herpes and streptococcus or staphylococcus infections, can be avoided by making sure that the tattooist shows you the installation of a new needle and tube setup from a sealed envelope immediately prior to getting started on your tattoo. “If the tattooist brushes aside your health concerns or avoids answering questions, leave,” advises Nelson.

In addition to watching for proper sterilization techniques, consumers need to seek out tattoo artists with training and experience. Untrained tattooists can create shaky, irregular lines or color that falls out, cause excessive bleeding or produce unsightly scars. Bad tattoos commonly have to be fixed or covered by an experienced professional, so it makes sense to get it right the first time.

Founded in 2002, Tattoo Johnny, Inc., represents many of the most famous tattoo artists and illustrators in the industry and attends more than 20 conventions a year to help educate the public on the do’s and don’ts of safe, quality tattoos. “People are often more careful about who cuts their hair than who does their tattoo. Yet a haircut grows out, while a tattoo lasts forever,” Nelson notes.
